Working Through A Key Hole: An Introduction to Laparoscopic Skills

Laparoscopic surgery, known for its minimally invasive nature, has transformed modern surgical practice by offering significant benefits such as reduced postoperative pain, shorter hospital stays, quicker recovery, and minimal scarring. To prepare the next generation of surgeons for this advanced field, we hosted the Laparoscopic Insights & Procedural Surgical Skills (LiPSS) workshop on 4th August 2024 at Picasso Hospital, Petaling Jaya, Selangor.

LiPSS provided medical students with a comprehensive learning experience, bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical laparoscopic skills. The event was structured to offer a deep dive into the evolution of laparoscopic surgery, along with hands-on practice in essential and advanced procedural techniques.

Opening Ceremony and Keynote Speeches

The event commenced with a formal opening ceremony. Kavin Rajendran, the Organizing Chairperson, kicked off the event with a welcoming speech, followed by addresses from MSSS President Al Hassan and General Director Dato Dr. Loh. Dato Dr. Loh further captivated the audience with a keynote discussion titled “From the Sledgehammer to Robotics: Where is Surgery Heading?” His insights into the technological advancements in surgery, from traditional tools to cutting-edge robotics, set the tone for the event, highlighting the growing role of technology in shaping the future of surgical care.

Lecture and Operation Theatre Tour

Following the keynote, Dr. Yeap delivered a dynamic lecture on laparoscopic cholecystectomy, featuring real-life recorded procedures. This session provided participants with an inside look at one of the most commonly performed laparoscopic surgeries, offering both theoretical and practical knowledge to strengthen their understanding.

Participants were then split into two groups for an exclusive operation theatre tour, where they were introduced to state-of-the-art robotic surgery equipment and laparoscopic instruments.

Hands-On Workshops: Mastering Laparoscopic Skills

The highlight of the LiPSS event was the extensive hands-on session, where participants rotated through specialized stations designed to learn both basic and advanced laparoscopic techniques. The stations featured various challenging yet engaging activities, including:

• Cyst Removal Simulation

• Placing Beads on a Rubber Band

• Simulated Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy

• Balloon Cystectomy Simulation

• Extracorporeal Suturing Techniques
  

The hands-on experience allowed students to refine their technical skills in a controlled environment, building confidence in performing laparoscopic procedures.

A Memorable Learning Experience

After hours of intense learning and skill-building, the participants gathered for the closing ceremony. The sense of accomplishment was palpable as they reflected on the new knowledge and capabilities they had gained throughout the day. The event concluded with a lunch, where participants had the chance to network with peers and faculty members.

LiPSS 2024 was more than just a workshop—it was a transformative educational experience. It equipped aspiring surgeons with the tools and confidence to tackle laparoscopic procedures and fostered a spirit of innovation in surgical education. By mastering both basic and advanced laparoscopic techniques, participants are now one step closer to excelling in their future surgical careers.
