MSSS x AMSA UPM x InciSioN MY: Bowel Anastomosis and Global Surgery Workshop (BAGS)

BAGS is a one-day workshop where participants can learn and practice various techniques for bowel anastomosis, a critical aspect of surgical procedures, under the guidance of experienced instructors

Bridging the Gap: Mastering Bowel Anastomosis

Malaysian Students' Surgical Society (MSSS) collaborated with AMSA Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) and InciSioN Malaysia to host their second event of the term- Bowel Anastomosis and Global Surgery (BAGS) Workshop, on 11th May 2024. The event kicked off with registration at 8 am, followed by an opening ceremony featuring welcome speeches from BAGS workshop organising chairperson Jeanne Lim, president of MSSS Al Hassan, president of AMSA UPM Justin Kok, and president of InciSioN Malaysia Dr. Lim Yee Siew. Tokens of appreciation were presented to the collaborating organisations.

In an enthralling global surgery talk, Dr. Noraishah Mydin Abdul-Aziz captivated the audience with her lived experience and scientific expertise. For 45 years, Dr. Noraishah has navigated life with both ileal conduit and spina bifida. Moderated by Shee Loke Yuan, she delved into the intricate world of embryology, explaining the root causes of spina bifida. She actively engaged in questions and fostered a truly interactive atmosphere. Despite undergoing 14 surgeries throughout her life, her friendly and enthusiastic demeanour shone through, a testament to her unwavering spirit. Dr. Noraishah is far more than just a patient. She is a champion for those living with spina bifida. Her published paper, "Survey in untethering of the spinal cord and urological manifestations among spina bifida patients in Malaysia," speaks volumes about her dedication in improving the lives of others within this community. Her advocacy extends beyond the realm of science. Dr. Noraishah is a passionate advocate in politics, determined to be a powerful voice for the underrepresented. A token of appreciation was gifted to such an inspiring character.

The workshop kicked off with a hands-on session focused on the building blocks of surgical skills led by MSSS peer facilitators. Participants were taught on essential surgical techniques like basic instrument handling, one-handed knot tying and fundamental suturing methods including simple interrupted, simple continuous, vertical mattress and so on. This hands-on session equipped them with the necessary skills to tackle the intricacies of bowel anastomosis covered later in the workshop.

Fueled by a hearty lunch, the workshop shifted gears towards bowel anastomosis, the highlight of this event. Dr. Ahmad Al-Hafeez Bin Ahmad Zaidi and Dr. Mohd Syakir Bin Mohd Azahar delivered a comprehensive lecture titled “Introduction to the Principle of Bowel Anastomosis''. Following the lecture, both doctors transitioned to a live demonstration. Using a pre-prepared model crafted with the cow's intestines, they showcased the techniques of bowel anastomosis. Participants were then presented with the opportunity to apply their newly learnt knowledge by performing the anastomosis themselves on their models. After completing the procedure, they could identify any potential leaks from the bowels by running water over the sutured area. Throughout this session, both doctors went around and offered personalised guidance to participants. Such an approach provided a supportive learning environment and maximised the impact of the workshop.

BAGS Workshop drew to a successful close with a brief closing ceremony. Participants were presented with certificates of recognition, a tangible symbol of their dedication in joining this event and the valuable skills they honed. Many expressed their satisfaction and positive feedback regarding this event.

It is undeniable that the success of BAGS Workshop would not have been possible without the tireless efforts of a dedicated team. A heartfelt thank you goes out to the MSSS committee team for spearheading this initiative, along with AMSA UPM and InciSioN Malaysia for their invaluable contribution. Special recognition goes to Dr. Noraishah Mydin Abdul-Aziz for her interesting talk,  Dr. Ahmad Al-Hafeez Bin Ahmad Zaidi and Dr. Mohd Syakir Bin Mohd Azahar for their insightful lectures and meticulous demonstrations.

BAGS Workshop undoubtedly equipped participants with newfound knowledge, honed skills and a spirit of camaraderie, propelling them forward as confident and collaborative surgeons of tomorrow.
