Cleft to Right - A Cleft Palate Repair is an event dedicated to honing participants' practical skills in cleft palate repair surgery through hands-on training and experiential learning

Cleft palate repair surgery, a pivotal procedure within the realm of paediatric surgery, requiring an understanding of both anatomical intricacies and surgical techniques. Mastery of the intricate structures of the orofacial region, coupled with precise surgical skills, is paramount in achieving optimal outcomes for cleft palate correction. This workshop aims to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical proficiency by immersing participants in a hands-on exploration of cleft palate anatomy and surgical repair techniques. By delving into the complexities of oro-maxillary structures and the intricacies of cleft palate anatomy, participants will gain the foundational knowledge and technical expertise essential for success in performing this delicate procedure.


This event was initiated by Ngew Wai Kit, Organising Chairperson and hosted by Malaysian Students’ Surgical Society (MSSS) in collaboration with Manipal University College Malaysia Surgical Society (MUCMSS). This workshop has 2 distinct components, on different platforms. Day 1 was conducted on the 27th June 2024 from 7:30 PM to 10:40 PM. The highlights of this webinar include a wide spectrum of cleft deformities and a demonstration of step by step guide to unilateral cleft lip repair. Day 2 comprises a physical workshop conducted a basic suturing training and demonstration of cleft lip repair techniques (Von Langenbeck Palatoplasty & Bardach two flap palatoplasty). This event aims to enhance anatomical knowledge and practical skills in Cleft Palate Repair Surgery while fostering collaboration to foster a culture of interdisciplinary learning and comprehensive learning experience.


Day 1 Webinar - Cleft to Right: A Cleft Palate Repair Workshop

The webinar on Cleft Palate Repair conducted by Dr. Zara Octavia Markos, a highly skilled Plastic Reconstructive surgeon. Dr, Zara Octavia Markos enlightened the participants about various aspects of Cleft Palate repair through engrossing Case Presentations, Clinical scenarios and demonstration of cleft palate repair in the operation theatre setting. Participants actively engaged with the contents through interactive polls, chat discussions, and live question submissions. Case presentations and clinical scenarios prompted the participants to analyse and discuss management strategies collaboratively under the guidance of Dr. Zara Octavia Markos. Ethical considerations in neonatal surgical care was emphasised throughout the webinar. Post webinar, the participants were given access to webinar resources including post webinar quizzes and case based assessments to further facilitate their learning.


Day 2 Physical Workshop - Cleft to Right: A Cleft Palate Repair Workshop

The Cleft Palate Repair Workshop followed a dynamic format encompassing theoretical sessions, demonstrations, and immersive hands-on practice utilising a cleft palate model. The workshop was kick start with an opening ceremony and inspiring welcoming speeches by Prof. Dato’ Dr. Kandasami Palayan, Advisor of Malaysian Students’ Surgical Society (MSSS) where he warmly welcomed the participants and encouraged them to approach the learning experience with great enthusiasm. Followed by Dr. Vishakan Kandiah, Student Advisor of Manipal University College Malaysia Surgical Society (MUCMSS) who delivered an enthusiastic speech which served as a motivation to the participants. Brief introductory speech was delivered by President of Manipal University College Malaysia Surgical Society (MUCMSS), Mr. Ngew Wai Kit. The physical workshop was hosted by two cheerful emcees, Ng Chien Huey and Nor Ellisa Farhan Bt Abdul Manap.


Lecture & Discussion on Cleft Palate Repair

This session was conducted by our esteemed Plastic Reconstructive Surgeon, Dr. Nicholas Franklin Tow Mun Chong. He enlightened the participants by providing an overview of Cleft Palate Repair, Importance and relevance of anatomy and physiology in cleft palate, including surface anatomy landmarks and terminology. Additionally, he also briefed us about Clinical-Practical Application in Cleft Palate Repair Surgery and application of surface anatomy landmarks in clinical settings. This orientated the participants about the key aspects of Cleft Palate Repair before moving on to the practical sessions. Lecture & Demonstration of Instrumental Handling, and suturing Techniques This session emphasised on the mastery of surgical instruments handling, basic and advanced suturing techniques and basic knotting techniques under the guidance of Dr. Vishakan Kandiah, Student Advisor of Manipal University College Malaysia Surgical Society (MUCMSS) and the peer facilitators from Malaysian Students Surgical Society (MSSS) & Manipal University College Malaysia Surgical Society (MUCMSS).


Demonstration of Life Surgical Video of Cleft Palate Repair

Moving to the heart of the workshop, ‘Demonstration of step to step procedure of cleft palate repair’ which was conducted along with anatomy landmarks on a human model through audio-visual aids. Two types of palatoplasty (Von Langenbeck palatoplasty & Bardach’s two flap palatoplasty) were introduced and demonstrated to the participants by esteemed Plastic Reconstructive Surgeon, Dr. Nicholas Franklin Tow Mun Chong.


The event drew to a close at about 4:00 PM with a token of appreciation to the guest speaker, exchange of token of appreciation between MUCMSS & MSSS, distribution of certificate of participation to the participants in recognition of their dedication and enthusiasm. At the end of the workshop, a feedback session was conducted to gather participants' insights and suggestions for future improvement.


In a nutshell, MSSS x MUCMSS Cleft to Right - A Cleft Palate Repair was a successful event meticulously planned and executed by the organising committee. This event loaded the participants with valuable knowledge from the esteemed professionals, hands on experience in surgical techniques. The seamless coordination between the virtual webinar and physical workshop, as well as high quality content and instructions contributed to the success of this event with overwhelming positive response from the participants.
