MSSS x MUCMSS - SCOPE
(Precision in Practice: Mastering Hemorrhoids and GI Techniques)

MSSS x MUCMSS - SCOPE is a 2-day collaboration event between MSSS and MUCMSS. The topic focused this time was on Mastering Hemorrhoids and GI Techniques.

The MSSS x MUCMSS - SCOPE event, held over the weekend of September 14-15, 2024, provided an exceptional opportunity for medical students to deepen their understanding of hemorrhoid management through a well-rounded combination of theoretical knowledge and practical experience. Hosted at Manipal University College Malaysia in Melaka, this two-day event successfully brought together eager students looking to enhance their skills in this vital area of surgical practice.

The first day commenced with an engaging webinar led by the distinguished Prof. Ravikumar. With participants joining from various backgrounds, the online session served as a vibrant platform for learning. Prof. Ravikumar expertly navigated the complex landscape of haemorrhoids, beginning with a comprehensive exploration of their etiopathogenesis and classification. His ability to simplify intricate concepts into digestible information was evident as he incorporated real-life case studies, making the clinical presentations relatable and applicable.

The webinar's structure included two major presentations, each meticulously crafted to build upon the previous one. In the first session, Prof. Ravikumar discussed not only the clinical manifestations of haemorrhoids but also the diagnostic investigations that aid in their identification. He highlighted potential complications, ensuring that participants understood the importance of accurate diagnosis and timely intervention. Following a brief break, the second session focused on management options, showcasing various surgical techniques, particularly the innovative doppler-guided hemorrhoidectomy. Attendees were encouraged to participate in interactive Q&A sessions, fostering lively discussions and allowing for clarification of complex topics, which significantly enhanced the overall learning experience.

The second day marked a shift from theory to hands-on application, as participants gathered at the Melaka campus. With eager students ready to delve into practical skills, the day kicked off with engaging sessions on Digital Rectal Examination (DRE) and Proctoscopy. These foundational skills are crucial for any healthcare professional dealing with gastrointestinal issues, and the hands-on practice allowed students to gain confidence in their abilities. The atmosphere was electric as students practised under the watchful eyes of experienced facilitators, sharing tips and techniques that enriched their learning.

Following these hands-on sessions, participants attended a lecture on colonoscopy and upper gastrointestinal endoscopy (OGDS), where they learned the theory behind these essential procedures. The subsequent live demonstrations further bridged the gap between theory and practice, as facilitators showcased the techniques in real-time, allowing students to observe the intricacies involved in each procedure.

After a lunch break, the Basic Surgical Skills Workshop (BSSW) took centre stage. This interactive workshop, led by peer facilitators from MSSS and MUCMSS, focused on essential suturing techniques. Students were encouraged to collaborate, share their experiences, and learn from each other in a supportive environment that fostered teamwork and camaraderie. The hands-on nature of this session allowed participants to refine their skills and receive immediate feedback, which is crucial for building confidence in a surgical setting.

The day culminated in the highly anticipated Ferguson hemorrhoidectomy session, where attendees had the opportunity to apply everything they had learned throughout the event. This hands-on experience reinforced their skills in a practical setting, and the excitement in the room was palpable as students engaged in discussions, shared techniques, and supported each other in this critical learning phase.

Special thanks are due to the dedicated lecturers Prof Ravikumar, Prof. Aung Win Thein, Dr. Jothinathan, and Dr. Tan Kok Liang, whose expertise significantly enriched the physical workshops and guided students through their practical training.

Overall, the MSSS x MUCMSS - SCOPE event was a resounding success, seamlessly blending theoretical knowledge with practical skills training. Participants left feeling empowered, equipped with new insights and hands-on experience that would serve them well in their future medical careers. The event not only strengthened individual skills but also reinforced the importance of collaboration and shared learning in the medical community.
