The Housemanship Essential Surgical Skills (HESS) Workshop 2024 is a dynamic training event by MSSS, crafted to equip future house officers with essential surgical skills. Focusing on General Surgery, Orthopaedics, and Obstetrics & Gynaecology, this hands-on workshop blends cutting-edge simulation tools and real-life practice models with expert guidance, ensuring participants are prepared to excel in their surgical rotations with confidence.
On the 23rd of November 2024, the Advanced Surgical Skills Centre (ASSC) at HCTM UKM was abuzz with excitement as final-year medical students gathered for the Housemanship Essential Surgical Skills (HESS) Workshop 2024. Designed to bridge the gap between medical school and housemanship, this comprehensive workshop provided an invaluable opportunity for students to gain hands-on experience in essential surgical skills under the guidance of expert surgeons.
The event kicked off with a captivating forum led by renowned speakers from three key specialties. In Orthopaedics, Prof. Datuk Dr. Sabarul Afian Mokhtar and Dr. Norliyana Binti Mazli delivered insightful presentations on managing trauma cases, highlighting the meticulous attention to detail required in wound care, fracture management, and surgical interventions to ensure optimal patient outcomes. Their emphasis on precision and adaptability in surgical practice resonated deeply with participants preparing for real-world challenges. For Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ixora Kamisan Atan, Prof. Dr. Lim Pei Shan, and Dr. Phon Su Ee captivated the audience with discussions centered on maternal and reproductive health. Topics ranged from the intricacies of managing obstetric emergencies to mastering gynecological procedures, with a focus on evidence-based practices and maintaining patient safety in high-pressure scenarios. Their expertise provided a nuanced understanding of the critical role O&G surgeons play in ensuring maternal and fetal well-being.
In General Surgery, Dr. Azmi bin Alias, Dr. Hisham Arshad Bin Dr. Habeebullah Khan, and Dr. Marjmin Osman shared their vast clinical experiences, addressing the practical challenges of surgical training and the critical importance of effective teamwork in achieving surgical excellence. Their talks illuminated the journey from mastering fundamental techniques to navigating complex procedures, inspiring participants to embrace the demanding yet rewarding path of a general surgeon. This compelling forum not only offered a wealth of knowledge but also inspired participants by showcasing the dedication and expertise required to thrive in the field of surgery.
Following the forum, participants rotated through highly engaging hands-on sessions tailored to each specialty. In Orthopaedics, led by Dr. Hemaraj, students practiced wound debridement using chicken models, simulating real-life trauma scenarios. This hands-on exercise not only honed their technical skills but also emphasized the importance of meticulous wound care in preventing complications.
The Obstetrics & Gynaecology sessions, facilitated by Dr. Phon Su Ee, offered participants the chance to explore vital skills such as fetal ultrasound, manual removal of the placenta, and dilatation and curettage. These stations provided a unique combination of diagnostic and procedural training, immersing participants in realistic scenarios they are likely to encounter during housemanship.
In General Surgery, Dr. Hisham Arshad Bin Dr. Habeebullah Khan led practical sessions focusing on subcuticular suturing and intracorporeal knotting. Using chicken skin for suturing and laparoscopic simulation tools for knotting, participants gained invaluable hands-on experience in techniques fundamental to both open and minimally invasive surgery.
Beyond the technical training, the workshop created a collaborative atmosphere that allowed participants to interact with their peers and mentors. Breaks and lunchtime were transformed into networking opportunities, where students exchanged ideas and gained career advice from seasoned surgeons.
The day concluded with tokens of appreciation presented to the facilitators and guest speakers, along with a celebratory group photo that captured the participants' sense of achievement. Feedback highlighted the workshop's success in instilling confidence and readiness among future house officers. Many participants noted how the practical, interactive nature of the event gave them clarity on their roles and expectations in surgical rotations.
The HESS Workshop 2024 was an enriching and transformative experience, providing participants with crucial surgical skills while fostering a strong sense of camaraderie and teamwork. This workshop highlighted the dedication and expertise of its organizers, facilitators, and participants, creating an empowering environment that prepared attendees for the demands of housemanship. The event’s success left a lasting impression, serving as a milestone in the journey of future house officers.
