MSSS x UM SurgSoc National Students' Surgical League 2024
NSSL 2024 is a national surgical competition organized by UM Surgical Society and MSSS, showcasing Malaysia’s top medical students in technical and collaborative challenges. Participants tested their skills in laparoscopic tasks, suturing, and precision challenges, gaining invaluable feedback from leading surgeons.

The Faculty of Medicine at University Malaya transformed into a battlefield of surgical skill and precision on September 28, 2024, as the National Student Surgical League (NSSL) kicked off its most thrilling edition yet. Organized by the University Malaya Surgical Interest Group (UM SIG) in collaboration with the Malaysian Students’ Surgical Society (MSSS), the NSSL brought together 135 ambitious medical students from across Malaysia for an inspiring and high-energy showdown. With 45 teams competing, these aspiring surgeons showcased both their technical skill and collaborative spirit under the guidance of prominent judges from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and the nation’s top medical institutions.
A Spectacular Opening Led by Cheryll Cheah
The event’s opening ceremony set the bar high for the day, led by the passionate and dedicated Organizing Chairperson, Cheryll Cheah Su Jean. The ceremony, filled with inspiring speeches and words of wisdom, saw Cheryll and esteemed guests—including Prof. David O’Regan and Prof. Dato’ Dr. Kandasami Palayan—encouraging participants to give their best and embrace the spirit of teamwork.
Skills Challenges: A Celebration of Dexterity and Precision
As the clock started, participants faced off in three main rotations: Laparoscopic Challenges, Suturing & Knotting Skills, and the Skills Challenge. Each task was designed to test the practical skills needed in surgery and encouraged students to push beyond their limits with quick thinking and hands-on mastery.
Laparoscopic Skills Challenges: Tasks like Sugar Cube Stacking and Peg Transfer tested participants’ hand-eye coordination and precision under pressure. The meticulous control required to stack and shape rubber bands in complex forms showcased their surgical potential.
Suturing & Knotting Skills: From creating perfect stitches on banana skins to mastering the subcuticular suture, students demonstrated their expertise in foundational surgical techniques. Judges offered constructive, personalized feedback, helping participants refine their skills for real-world applications.
Skills Challenge: Perhaps the highlight of the day, the Skills Challenge featured tasks such as Jenga with Forceps and Banana Suturing, blending creativity with surgical skills. In “Jenga with Forceps,” teams removed blocks and restacked them without toppling the tower—a true test of a steady hand and unwavering focus. The “Banana Suturing” challenge, where students performed sutures around a curved surface, demanded exceptional dexterity and patience.
Beyond Competition: A Bonding Experience
While the NSSL was fiercely competitive, it was also a celebration of camaraderie, learning, and mutual support. The feedback sessions allowed students to bond with the judges, including esteemed professionals like Prof. Dr. Lim Khean Gee and Dr. Nadhirah Kahar, who shared real-life insights from their surgical journeys. These interactions underscored the event’s emphasis on mentorship and growth, creating an atmosphere where students could learn from the best in the field.
The NSSL 2024 Legacy: Inspiring Malaysia’s Next Surgical Leaders
As the day drew to a close, participants celebrated a day well spent, and the air buzzed with excitement for NSSL 2.0 next year. From Cheryll Cheah’s stellar leadership to the students’ unwavering dedication, NSSL 2024 was a resounding success, solidifying its place as a milestone event in Malaysia’s medical education. Students left with new skills, lasting friendships, and a shared vision for the future of surgery.
NSSL 2024 was not just a competition but a vivid celebration of Malaysia’s future surgeons, filled with heart, skill, and promise. We eagerly await next year’s event, as these bright talents continue their journey toward making a lasting impact in the field of medicine!
