MSSS x UOC Sunathon: Basic Circumcision Skills Workshop (BCSW)

BCSW is a one-day workshop that provides comprehensive simulation-based learning of basic circumcision procedure in a safe, reliable, and realistic manner, mainly focusing on child circumcision

Circumcision: once a tradition, now a routine

With a rich history dating back millennia and remaining a common practice in many parts of the world, circumcision continues to be a relevant surgical procedure for medical professionals. Recognizing this ongoing need, the Basic Circumcision Skills Workshop (BSCW) 2024 proudly kicked off Malaysian Student’s Surgical Society’s (MSSS) new term. This workshop offered a valuable opportunity for participants to gain in-depth knowledge and practical skills related to circumcision procedures.

Hosted by Malaysian Students’ Surgical Society (MSSS) in collaboration with University of Cyberjaya Sunathon Society, BCSW took place on 20th April 2024 at University of Cyberjaya (UoC). To kickstart the event, Professor Dr. Zabidi Hussin, Vice Chancellor of University of Cyberjaya delivered his opening remarks. He warmly welcomed all participants and encouraged them to approach the learning experience with great enthusiasm. Following Professor Dr. Zabidi, brief speeches were delivered by president of MSSS Al Hassan, president of UoC Sunathon Society Umar Hilman and the organising chairperson of BCSW, Gan Geyee. An introduction to circumcision was shared by the vice organising chairperson, Kavin.

Keynote Speeches

In the first talk titled "Introduction to Circumcision: A Pediatric Perspective," Associate Professor Dr. Nor Azlina Mohammad Rashid, an expert in general paediatrics, explored common paediatric issues seen in circumcision. She cited research from prominent medical publications to support her insights. Dr. Azlina's profound knowledge of paediatrics reminded participants of the importance of learning throughout their medical careers.

Building on Dr. Azlina's insightful presentation, esteemed Associate Professor Dr. Maung Maung Soe took the stage for the second lecture. Titled "Workflow of Paediatric Circumcision," Dr. Maung drew on his extensive experience to enlighten participants. Dr. Maung's detailed slides and videos equipped participants with useful theoretical and practical knowledge of the paediatric circumcision process. The floor was then opened for questions, fostering an engaging discussion.

Hands-on sessions

The circumcision workshop kicked off after lunch break. Participants honed their basic suturing skills for circumcision in smaller groups led by MSSS and UoC Sunathon medical students.

The highlight of the event was Dr. Mohamad Salleh Bin Abdul Aziz's comprehensive demonstration of the entire circumcision procedure, providing a valuable overview for all participants. This was followed by a hands-on session where participants practised suturing techniques on prepared models, which they were allowed to keep. With a wealth of experience under his belt, Dr. Salleh is a highly regarded mentor for medical students. His patience and passion for teaching are truly commendable, particularly when guiding students through the intricacies of circumcision procedures.

Additionally, participants put their hand-eye coordination to the test by trying out the newly acquired laparoscopic sets. Guided by our peer facilitators, they navigated through various stations, honing their laparoscopic skills which are essential in their medical journey.

The event drew to a close at about 5pm with a certificate presentation.  Commemorative group photos were captured by photographers. Basic Circumcision Skills Workshop (BSCW) 2024 proved to be a huge success, garnering positive feedback from participants. Gratitude was extended to guest speakers, committee members, collaborators and participants for their unwavering contributions. We trust that BCSW 2024 proved to be an unforgettable experience for all participants, empowering them to embark on a lifelong journey of medical exploration and growth.
