BRIDGING TRADITION AND TECHNOLOGY~ MSSS’s Impactful Presence at the ISUCRS & SELSMAR Congress 2026

The future of surgery is evolving rapidly and as medical students, experiencing these advancements firsthand is a vital part of our journey. Recently, the Malaysian Students’ Surgical Society (MSSS) had the distinct honor of participating in a truly landmark event: the 33rd Biennial Congress of the International Society of University Colon and Rectal Surgeons (ISUCRS) 2026, held in conjunction with the 6th Biennial Congress of the Society of Endoscopic, Laparoscopic and Robotic Surgeons Malaysia (SELSMAR Congress 2026).
Bringing together the brightest minds, innovators and pioneers in colorectal surgery from across the globe, this prestigious congress was an unforgettable experience for all the students who attended.
Bridging Tradition and Technology in a Global Village
The congress beautifully explored its central theme, “Innovations and Collaborations in Colorectal Surgery: Bridging Tradition and Technology in a Global Village."
Surgery is an art deeply rooted in foundational principles, yet it is constantly being reshaped by modern innovation. Throughout the event, we witnessed how time-honored techniques are seamlessly integrated with cutting-edge technologies to enhance patient care. The dynamic discussions and presentations showcased the latest research and tools reshaping colorectal surgery on a global scale, providing an incredibly inspiring environment for future surgeons.
Key Highlights for MSSS Members
Through active committee participation, MSSS secured unprecedented opportunities for our members, making this congress a major milestone for student involvement. Here is a look at what we achieved:
The SELSMAR x MSSS Presidential Forum: We proudly hosted a high-level dialogue bridging current surgical leaders with the next generation. This forum provided an invaluable platform to discuss the future of surgical training, mentorship, and the evolving role of medical students in the wider surgical community.
Dedicated Laparoscopic Skills Workshop: Recognizing that hands-on experience is the cornerstone of surgical education, the congress featured a dedicated laparoscopy workshop just for medical students. Under the guidance of expert surgeons, participants were able to practice and refine foundational minimally invasive skills.
Complimentary SELSMAR Associate Membership: In a massive step forward for student integration into professional bodies, MSSS members who participated were awarded complimentary associate membership to SELSMAR. This grants our students long-term access to professional networks, resources, and future events.
Enhanced Research and Academic Collaboration: The event served as a powerful launchpad for deeper collaboration in research, publications, and academic activities. Many students connected with established professionals, opening doors for future mentorship and high-level academic writing.
A Lasting Educational Partnership: The congress solidified an ongoing partnership between SELSMAR and MSSS. Moving forward, both organizations have pledged mutual support in hosting and participating in future surgical conferences and educational events.
Looking Ahead
The ISUCRS and SELSMAR Congress 2026 was more than just a series of lectures; it was a collaborative space that inspired healthcare professionals and students alike to push the boundaries of technological progress.
By bringing together global experts and integrating students directly into the conversation, the event fostered the continuous advancement of surgical practices. We left the congress more inspired than ever, equipped with new skills, expanded networks, and a clearer vision of our future in surgery.
Thank you to everyone who participated and helped make this collaboration a resounding success. We look forward to seeing even more of you at our future events!
