MSSS Shines at MyHPB 2026: Celebrating Innovation and Student Excellence in HPB Surgery

Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary (HPB) surgery is one of the most complex, demanding, and rapidly evolving subspecialties in the surgical field. Over recent decades, it has witnessed significant growth in prominence across Malaysia, attracting a broader spectrum of practitioners and expanding its influence within the surgical community.

Recently, members of the Malaysian Students’ Surgical Society (MSSS) had the distinct privilege of attending the MyHPB 2026 Congress, organized by the Malaysian Society of Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Surgeons (MyHPBS). Held from August 21st to 22nd, 2026, at the Vertical @ Connexion Conference & Event Centre (CCEC) in Bangsar South, Kuala Lumpur, the event was a phenomenal showcase of the unwavering dedication demonstrated by the pioneers of HPB surgery in our nation.

Integrate, Innovate, Inspire

This year's congress, operating under the powerful theme "Integrate • Innovate • Inspire," truly lived up to its name. The two-day premier scientific meeting brought together HPB experts, general surgeons, medical officers, allied health professionals, and medical students.

For attendees, the congress offered an immersive look into the latest updates in liver, pancreas, biliary, and transplant surgery. Beyond the insightful plenary sessions, the event was heavily anchored in practical, hands-on learning. The pre-congress masterclasses—including the Laparoscopic Liver Surgery workshop at University of Malaya (UM), the Laparoscopic Pancreatic Surgery workshop at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), and the ERCP Workshop in Alor Setar—provided a stunning look into the high-level technical skills required in modern HPB practice.

Formally established in August 2019, MyHPBS marks a significant milestone in the growth of this subspecialty in Malaysia. For medical students, platforms like MyHPB 2026 align perfectly with our educational goals: facilitating the exchange of professional experiences, networking with leading local and international experts, and witnessing the tangible development of surgical techniques.

A Monumental Achievement for MSSS

While the conference itself was a hub of knowledge, it also brought a moment of immense pride for our society during the scientific competitions.

We are absolutely thrilled to announce that one of our very own committee members, MSSS Chief Editor Gannesh a/l Guna Segaran, won the 1st Prize for Poster Presentation at MyHPB 2026!

Gannesh’s award-winning research was titled:

"Indocyanine Green Fluorescence Imaging for Intraoperative Perfusion Assessment in Pancreatic Surgery: A Meta-Analysis of Its Predictive Value for Postoperative Pancreatic Fistula and Complications."

This is a highly complex and incredibly relevant topic. Postoperative pancreatic fistulas remain a significant challenge in HPB surgery, and Gannesh’s meta-analysis on the predictive value of Indocyanine Green (ICG) fluorescence imaging highlights how modern intraoperative technology can be leveraged to assess tissue perfusion and mitigate severe complications.

Winning first prize at a national specialty conference is a testament to the high caliber of research, dedication, and academic rigor that our MSSS committee members strive for. It proves that as medical students, we are not just passive observers of surgical advancement—we can be active contributors to the academic literature that drives patient care forward.

Inspiring the Next Generation

Gannesh’s incredible achievement at MyHPB 2026 serves as a powerful inspiration for all medical students across Malaysia. It highlights the importance of getting involved in research early, seeking out mentorship, and having the courage to present our findings on national platforms alongside established experts.

We extend our deepest congratulations to Gannesh a/l Guna Segaran for this outstanding accomplishment, and we thank MyHPBS for hosting an exceptional congress that continues to nurture the next generation of surgical leaders.

To all MSSS members: let this be the motivation you need to start your next research project. The surgical community is ready to hear your voice!
