International Surgical Week 2024

Updated: Nov 13, 2024

On 25-29 August 2024, the International Surgical Week was held in Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC) in conjunction with the 50th World Congress of the International Society of Surgery. This prestigious conference was jointly organised with the 51st Annual Scientific Congress of the College of Surgeons Academy of Medicine Malaysia (CSAMM). Representing the Malaysian Students’ Surgical Society (MSSS), 5 delegates attended the conference. The conference was a platform for world renowned surgeons who have contributed in the development of their respective fields in their home countries to gather and collaborate to establish the foundations for future diagnostic and surgical challenges, and discuss novel approaches and standards, facilitating progress towards real time, patient orientated solutions.

During the conference, MSSS had the opportunity to collaborate with the International Association of Student Surgical Societies (IASSS) for the organization of the Golden Scalpel Competition, a surgical skills competition that all conference delegates can participate in. The competition consisted of a knot tying station, suturing stations with emphasis on subcuticular suturing and laparoscopic skills station. MSSS delegates were handling the running of the suturing station. This was also a unique opportunity for our MSSS delegates, who are soon going to venture into the path of surgical specialization, to network and learn from the experiences of established surgeons and share about MSSS and its ventures with them. Besides, our delegates learnt about the most recent advances in the field of trauma surgery, uppper gastrointestinal surgery, breast and endocrine surgery which were the fields of focus during this conference through the forums, paper presentations as well as the video presentations. During the course of the conference, many sponsorship opportunities were explored with the medical related companies that set up booths during the conference too.

Overall, our delegates had a fruitful experience during the conference and further fueled their passion and interest to delve into the field of surgery in the future.

“International Surgical Week was truly unforgettable. Meeting surgeons whose work I’d only read about was surreal, and discussing advancements with brand representatives offered a glimpse into the future of surgery in Malaysia. The exchange of ideas and reading inspiring presentations strengthened my commitment to this field. I left with new friends from across the globe who share the same vision for the future of surgery.”

- Praveena A/P Vijaya Devan, Vice President
